Psychology Service

It is a structured, short-term, patient-oriented method suitable for adults and children, group or individual therapies, with a practical approach to problem-solving. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the complex relationship among emotions, thoughts, and attitudes that are at the basis of our problems. It assumes that psychological problems are consequences of the way we think and feel, and thus affect our behavior. After a careful psychological and diagnostic assessment, the therapist collaborates with the patient and customizes the therapy:

  • to define the goals to be achieved
  • to choose the treatment tools according to the patient’s needs
  • to assesses periodically the course of the therapy

The center offers cognitive behavioral psychotherapy to adults and children affected with the following problems:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression disorders
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders
  • Somatic symptom disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Sleep-wake disorders
  • Sexual dysfunctions
  • Gender dysphoria

The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program (MBSR) is a scientific approach developed by Jon Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School-Center for Mindfulness. The MBSR program includes 8 weekly sessions; generally, group therapy is proposed, but individual sessions can be organized on request. It is a psychological process of bringing one’s attention to internal experiences, and developing personal resources in order to manage the difficult situations that occur in life. The program teaches how:

  • to identify the sources of stress
  • to respond to stimuli rather than reacting impulsively
  • to understand his/her automatisms
  • to develop or reinforce the ability to manage and face emotions
  • to take care of himself/herself

In the last 30 years, scientific research has shown that the application of Mindfulness protocols have significant benefits for a variety of health conditions:

  • chronic pain
  • cardiovascular diseases and hypertension
  • cancer (psychological aspects and pain management)
  • migraine
  • stress-related digestive disorders
  • concentration problems
  • sleep disorders
  • eating disorders
  • depression
  • anxiety

Interaction and psychological support can mitigate the suffering caused by an oncology disease, making therapy more bearable and improving the recovery process. The psycho-oncology service is designed to welcome and support throughout their therapeutic path people who were diagnosed with cancer. The consequences of this disease cause deep changes in the perception of one’s self, both from a physical and a psychic standpoint, and in the emotional and relationship world. Experiencing the loss of self-esteem and of physical and mental health, paired with the uncertainty of internal and external relations, results in a strong need to be listened to and acknowledged, to be understood and supported. Patients seeking help will find competent specialists trained to help process the traumatic and painful experiences caused by the disease. At UPMC Institute for Health Chianciano Terme, individual and/or group psychotherapy and support programs are available to meet the needs of health and well-being of cancer patients from the moment of the diagnosis.

Contracting cancer is a traumatic event that hinders all spheres of a person’s life, from the physical to psychological and spiritual one, and that has an impact on the entire network of social and interpersonal relationships built over time. Listening and understanding the consequences of the disease and of the therapies on patient’s life is the first step to ensure an adequate treatment. Psychological distress, just like physical distress, should never be underestimated, but monitored as a vital parameter throughout the course of the illness. Psycho-oncology is a fundamental support for cancer patients and their families. Their aim is to relieve stressful moments during the course of the disease, listen to the emotional reactions, and discuss strategies to face the new situation and motivate a new approach to life.

Pediatric psychology

The pediatric psychology service provides specialized care to children and adolescents facing a chronic or acute illness or a standard developmental crisis, and to their families. The goal is to promote psychological well-being, reducing the stress caused by difficult experiences and traumatic changes related to age or to the social environment. The pediatric psychology service offers a listening and supporting space for children in distressful situations, and also for their families. The first contact with critical patients, even in situations of urgency or emergency that raise strong concerns on parental and educational management, includes an individual session and a family assessment to evaluate and support their parental skills. The goal is to mediate the parent-child relationships and promote better defense and adapting strategies for children in their social environment.

Psychopathology for the adolescent

The service offers diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of evolutionary disorders related to different areas of development: psychomotor, cognitive, affective and relational, behavior, conduct, and addiction. The psychology and psychopathology service for adolescents is a welcoming space where adolescents with different disabilities, psychological or relating to changes after stressful and traumatic events, are taken care of. Adolescents with problems of addiction, relationship with food and with their body, relational and behavioral disorders, need intervention programs aimed at recomposing the emotional experience interrupted by the traumatic condition. The therapeutic goal is to achieve personal, social, and family safety and wellbeing.

Sport Psychology

The Sport Psychology service is dedicated to those practicing sports at an amateur and competitive level, individuals and teams, with attention and concentration difficulties while practicing sports and/or relationship issues with the team or with the leader of the team. The aim is to improve their ability to manage their cognitive and emotional skills linked to sports performance, to improve pre- and post-race anxiety management, to promote a better knowledge of resources and limitations both personal and of the team.
