Pediatric Cardiology at UPMC Institute for Health

Pediatric Cardiology: UPMC Institute for Health Chianciano Terme offers a new screening program for children.

This program includes heart morphology and function tests to assess the health of the heart, and is conducted by a cardiologist specialized in pediatric cardiology.

What is Pediatric Cardiology?

Pediatric cardiology is a field of medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of structural and/or functional heart diseases, which can develop at an early age (e.g., congenital heart diseases, acquired heart diseases or fetal cardiac diseases). Heart diseases that present at a pediatric age are different from adult heart diseases. For this reason, children require a specialist examination by a cardiologist with specific experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric heart diseases.

When to consult a pediatric cardiologist?

A pediatric cardiology screening is recommended, even if there are no particular symptoms or conditions, to:

  • assess the cardiovascular system of the child
  • identify any heart defects
  • detect the presence and nature of abnormal heart murmurs.

Murmurs, which are detected by the doctor with auscultation, can also be present in children with no heart disease, and with a healthy heart (innocent or functional murmurs), and typically disappear during puberty. Pathological murmurs, on the other hand, can be a sign of a heart disease.

A pediatric cardiac screening is always recommended before children participate in any sports activity, either competitive and/or recreational, especially now that children are encouraged to engage in physical activities to fight sedentariness and increasingly widespread diseases, such as obesity and diabetes.

Without sparking unnecessary alarm, the consequences of some heart diseases should not be underestimated. Prevention is the key to protecting the health of adults, and this must also be the case for children.
