Endocrinology and Metabolism

Endocrine-metabolism alterations are at the basis of the majority of cardiovascular diseases, tumors, neurodegenerative disorders, chronic osteo-arthropathies, and multidistrict pain syndromes.

Endocrinology specialist consult

This consult is offered for all adult and pediatric endocrinology and metabolism pathologies, including obesity and diabetes, metabolic syndrome, thyroid diseases, and osteoporosis. The consult lasts approximately one hour and involves assessing and taking charge of all the person’s issues, that will be managed in collaboration with the family doctor and, if necessary, with other specialists. During the consult, the patient history and medical documentation are reviewed, a physical examination is performed, anthropometry data obtained (height, weight, circumferences, and skin folds), and a final summary, recommendations, and written report issued for the family doctor, with a request to receive additional tests and/or further information, if necessary. Based on the patient history and physical examination, the consult can include an ultrasound of the thyroid and carotid and, if required, a bioelectrical impedance analysis.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

This is a screening method to study the body composition. The BIA integrates the specialty consult for subjects with obesity and metabolic syndrome, and it is also useful to diagnose and assess suspected alterations of the physical structure, such as sarcopenia, excess fat in subjects of normal weight, and altered hydration (fluid retention, dehydration).

Echo-color-Doppler of the thyroid

A thyroid ultrasound is important to identify, assess, and monitor thyroid nodules, chronic thyroiditis, and alterations of the thyroid function (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism). This test also allows to detect the presence and extent of carotid atheromas (thickening of the carotid wall and presence of fiber-lipid and calcified plaques) as indicators of possible alteration of the lipid (alteration of circulating levels of cholesterol and lipoproteins) and glycidic metabolism (diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2).
